Winter Weather Accidents Require Chiropractic Care

Did you know chiropractors see many seasonal injuries?

What winter injuries should you watch out for?

Slips and falls become more common in the wintertime due to snow and ice. While these falls may not feel serious, 1 out of 5 falls causes a serious injury, says the CDC. Falls can cause visible injuries like broken bones, but can also leave invisible soft tissue injuries that can cause even more pain if not treated.

While slipping on ice, you might try to catch yourself by putting out your arms. When you land, the impact can break bones in your wrist or arms. If you land on your bottom, back, or side, your soft tissue absorbs the shock. This can lead to muscle sprain, torn ligaments and tendons, and can even affect the spine with herniated discs. If you hit your head on the way down, you could be left with a concussion too.

Car accidents also occur more often in the winter for the same reasons. When you get in an accident, your bones, soft tissue, and spine can be harmed. This can lead to muscle injuries, spinal misalignments, and even whiplash.

See A Chiropractor in Ann Arbor After Your Accident

The great thing about chiropractic is that it’s non-invasive. Dr. Thatcher will use his activator tool to correct misalignments in your spine. This can help reduce your pain, improve your range of motion, and also reduce inflammation, which helps your soft tissue injuries heal. Thatcher Chiropractic & Laser also uses a cold laser to help speed up the healing process for broken bones and concussions. Laser works by reducing inflammation and creating more energy in your cells that accelerates healing. Laser treatments are quick too, usually lasting about 10 minutes.

How Can You Relieve Sciatica?

Does your sciatica leave you in constant pain?

Want to know your treatment options?

A chiropractor can adjust the spine, reduce the spine’s stress, and pinpoint any imbalances that could be causing you pain. Dr. Thatcher will start by using the MyoVision scanner to do a surface EMG. This scan shows the main areas of stress on your spine and where Dr. Thatcher will focus. Dr. Thatcher will then correct any misalignment in a non-invasive way by using an activator tool to gently adjust the vertebrae. Depending on your unique situation and level of pain, you may need multiple sessions to relieve your sciatica pain.

Dr. Thatcher can also teach you some exercises to keep pain away, such as the piriformis stretch, which can help stretch muscles that may come in contact with the sciatic nerve. You’ll also want to stay active because prolonged sitting or a sedentary lifestyle can aggravate your symptoms.

What is Sciatica?

Do you feel a shooting pain in your legs or hips?

Numbness or tingling?

You may have sciatica. Sciatica describes pain or discomfort that comes from the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve begins at your lower back, travels down through the hips, rear, and each leg. The pain can vary, ranging from mild pain to sharp jolts and can include sensations such as burning, numbness, and tingling. Typically, sciatica only affects one side of the body.

What causes sciatica?

A herniated disc or bone spur on the vertebrae are the most common causes of sciatica. To have a herniated disc means that the rubbery disc that sits between the vertebrae in your spine has been damaged. The disc is made up of a tough perimeter with a soft middle. The soft portion breaks through the tougher layer and presses up against the sciatic nerve, causing pain. In the case of bone spurs, a bony projection grows where your bones meet in a joint, such as the facet joints of the spine. These spurs can also rub up against the sciatic nerve. Herniated discs and bone spurs can occur in anyone, but usually occur in people between ages 35-50.

Tips to Avoid Back Pain While Raking

Raking leaves is nearly unavoidable in the fall in Michigan, so learning how to rake without hurting your back is extremely important. Following these tips can benefit your back over the next couple of months.

Warm up ‒ Giving your body proper time to prime your muscles before exercise is incredibly important. As the weather gets colder, you need more time to properly warm up your muscles, so consider going for a walk or jog and stretching before raking (Avoid stretching before warming up, as stretching cold muscles could lead to injury).

Be aware of your posture ‒ Good form when raking will help stave off back pain. Be sure to bend your knees slightly and reach with your arms, not with your back. Avoid twisting your back and any other awkward body positions that could strain your spine.

Switch hands ‒ Repetitive motion is a key cause of injury. Spend equal time raking on both sides can help alleviate this.

Pace yourself ‒ People often want to get all their raking done quickly to get it out of the way, but it’s important to take breaks and rest during a long day of raking. If you have a big yard, taking it slow will be better for your back.

How Raking Can Lead to Back Pain

Fall in Ann Arbor means the return of Michigan Football and trips to cider mills, but it also means the return of raking.

The strain that raking puts on your back and the repetition can lead to serious pain, so it’s important to be proactive to prevent damage. Here are some potential causes of back pain:

  • Poor raking form: Bending and reaching at uncomfortable angles will put stress on your back.
  • Overuse: Repetitive motions can put extra wear and tear on your back.
  • Lack of rest: Trying to tackle your whole yard at once might not be a good idea.
  • Poor quality rake: Using a bad rake can cause you to overexert yourself, and could contribute to poor form.
Visit our website for more raking tips!

If you (and your back) are dreading another season of raking, it might be time to find a chiropractor to set your back on the right track.

Cracking Your Back and Neck Could Increase Your Pain

Do you have pain in your spine?

Do you try to relieve that pain by cracking?

Cracking your neck or back can cause more damage than you might think. The spine is made up of vertebrae that hold the bundle of nerves known as the spinal cord that leads to the brain. Manipulating the spine is a delicate process and should be left to professionals.

Here are two ways cracking could cause you more pain:

Can cause pinched nerves ‒ By stretching and twisting your body in unsafe ways or going too far, you can pinch a nerve. Pinched nerves are painful and will only increase your discomfort.

Can increase your pain ‒ If your pain or discomfort is due to an injury such as a slipped disc, cracking the injured area could make your condition even worse.

How Cracking Your Neck and Back Can Leave Long-Term Damage

Have you been cracking your neck or back for years?

Want to break this habit?

Cracking your spine can be addictive. When you crack your joints, endorphins are released into your system. These endorphins provide a satisfactory feeling and can mask your discomfort or pain, but this is only temporary. The neck or back will return to its previous state and your discomfort will return. It becomes a vicious cycle: the more you crack, the more you’ll have to do it to feel normal, causing even more damage.

Cracking your neck or back can cause more damage than you might think, especially over time. Ligaments in your neck and back can be permanently stretched or damaged. This can lead to osteoarthritis, a condition where the cartilage that sits between vertebrae can wear down. This can decrease your range of motion and lead to further joint damage and pain.

If you are cracking your neck or back often, your problem is misalignment. While cracking might provide some relief, cracking doesn’t fix the misalignment. You need to get your spine adjusted by a chiropractor.
